Granite is a
hard, coarse grained rock, that makes up a large part of every
continent. Granite consists chiefly of three minerals:
quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase feldspar. These
minerals make granite white, pink, or light grey. Granite also
contains small amounts of dark brown, light green, or black
minerals, such as hornblende, and biotite mica.
Granite is an igneous
rock which is crystalline in structure. The grains of granite
minerals are so large that they can easily be distinguished.
The minerals in granite are interlocked like the pieces of a jigsaw
puzzle. As a result, granite is a strong, durable rock used in
the construction of buildings. Most granite can withstand
weathering for centuries and can be polished smooth.
It is widely used for
interior and exterior finished stone products such as countertops,
sinks, bathtubs, floors, fireplaces, stairs, balconies and walkways.
Granite is becoming the stone of choice in the new age. For
the home, people are now preferring natural products over synthetic
products.
